Recognition is finally arriving for Female Old Masters. It’s a familiar trope but exciting nonetheless. Interest in, demand for and prices of the work of women artists from the 17th century has been soaring. The first public statue of a transgender woman in the nude is unveiled. A new statue depicting a nude, openly trans woman was placed on display at Art Basel this year. The piece was created by trans artist Puppies Puppies (aka Jade Guanaro Kuriki-Olivo) and is considered to be the first work of this kind to be installed in public. The sculpture is meant to bring visibility to the existence of trans people worldwide, while also highlighting the rising backlash trans people are facing in the US and abroad. The Art Newspaper.

The introspective journals of sculptor Anne Truitt. Artist Anne Truitt is well-known for her minimalist wooden sculptures, but, as with many women artists, her contributions reach far beyond her best known work. Truitt, who began journaling later in life, published three of her journals while alive. Her daughter is now posthumously releasing a fourth journal titled “Yield”: a continuation of her thoughts on the tenuous relationship between family and work. The New Yorker.

Marina Abramović launches an NFT. Famed artist Marina Abramović, known primarily for her avant garde performance pieces, is entering into the NFT space. She is releasing the original recording of her performance The Hero (2001) as an NFT at Art Basel. The NFT will be released on the smaller blockchain network Tezos, known for being more environmentally friendly than many of its counterparts. ARTNews.
