When we come across someone who posts too many selfies on social media or constantly talks about themselves on a first date, we might be quick to call them a narcissist.

A true narcissist, however, is someone with Narcissistic Personality disorder (NPD) which is a mental condition characterized by an inflated sense of importance, lack of empathy, and an excessive need for attention and admiration.

NPD, like most personality disorders, isn’t black and white; Narcissism falls on a spectrum. Understanding the different types of narcissists, and their defining characteristics can be helpful in spotting these individuals.

Here Are 4 Different Types of Narcissists:

1 — Grandiose Narcissist

“I’m better than you, and I know it”

This is your classic arrogant and attention-seeking narcissist. They are entitled, preoccupied with success, and jealous of other people.

Often misusing or exploiting relationships for one’s own benefit, they will gaslight you to doubt your own feelings and intuitions.
