If I learned anything last year, it’s this: I have to be proactive about taking care of my mental health.

I’ve worked on this by going to therapy, making plans with friends, and finding ways to enjoy time on my own. I’ve incorporated more exercise I enjoy and created fun goals, like reading more books this year.

Additionally, for Mental Health Awareness Month this past May, being proactive looked like reading Matt Haig’s book “Reasons to Stay Alive.”

To be clear, I didn’t feel suicidal at the time, nor do I feel that way now. At the same time, I know a few key truths: I’ve struggled with suicidal ideation in the past, I tend to feel it suddenly, and I’ve had (very passive) passive suicidal thoughts here and there more recently.

In short, I read this book because I knew future me would need it, and I knew current me couldn’t be hurt by it.
