As the stigma around mental health has lessened in society, the amount of money flowing into mental health-related startups has exploded. In 2020 alone, investors poured close to $1.5 billion dollars into mental health-related startups. These funded startups are broadly working on “solving the problem of the growing prevalence of mental health disease.”

But what does “solving the problem of mental health” mean? What are the different approaches to doing this? Where is the startup industry focused? To get a viewpoint on these questions I researched 50 of the largest mental health startups in search of patterns and trends.

80% of the startups I analyzed fell into the following buckets:

  • New Age Therapeutics
  • Modern Pharmaceuticals
  • Technology Enabled Therapist Networks
  • Mental Health & Wellness

Let’s look at the categories one at a time.
