Imagine, for a moment, that you’re in the hospital, sitting by the bedside of someone you love deeply who is dying. Think of someone with whom you feel quite close and who you love very much.

Maybe this is your mom or dad. It could be a brother or sister, your child, your romantic partner, or your best friend. But pick someone specific and then picture this for a moment, enough that your chest gets just a little bit tight with imagining it.

Now imagine reaching into your bag or pocket while sitting by their hospital bed and pulling out your phone as you’re weeping, clicking open the camera app, and switching it to video record. Then slowwwwwly extending your arm to full length and pressing the button, holding the phone aloft as you start recording yourself.

How did you just react to the scenario I presented?

I suspect many of you (at least I hope it was many, if not all) felt yourself internally recoil.

Now take another moment to really try and picture this situation, and imagine how your thinking and behavior may have shifted once you hit that “record” button.
