Coping Strategies for Women with ADHD

Carpools, kid’s sports, bake sales, fund-raising, the societal demands on moms are endless: never mind if you have Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder. Women with ADHD often feel they can never measure up. Eye rolls from co-workers when they are late for a meeting, or feeling judged by the PTA when cupcakes are forgotten at the bake sale. ADHD women can be left feeling scattered, as it seems they can never find keys or cell phone. Women with ADHD have higher numbers of lower socioeconomic categories than their counterparts. The pressures can be endless. They frequently encounter co-morbid mental health disorders such as anxiety, depression or addictions, as Fuller et al. 2016 reported in their study, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Casts a Long shadow: Findings from a Population-Based Study of Adult Women with Self-Reported ADHD.

As a mental health therapist and a woman with ADHD, I have experienced firsthand the pressures and often subsequent shame felt by many women with ADHD. I have developed strategies that can help manage symptoms and improve self-worth and may improve the lives of other neurologically challenged women. These tools can empower persons with ADHD to achieve their personal, family, and professional goals.
