Serena Williams is one of the most accomplished tennis players of all time, but her athletic achievements aren’t the only thing inspiring about her. She’s also been refreshingly open about her mental health, and more specifically, her experiences with depression.

Williams’s trouble with depression started over a decade ago. Like many who struggle with this prevalent mental health issue, her depression has come and gone throughout her life.

At times, depression has even interrupted her career. According to her autobiography, it kept her sidelined from tennis for half of 2006. It slowed her down again a decade later, in 2015.

Most recently, Williams faced postpartum depression after the birth of her daughter in 2017. Nearly one year later, she took to Instagram to acknowledge that she was still having difficulties.

However, despite her ongoing struggles with mental health, she has always faced each new challenge head-on. Williams knows that the best solution to her depression isn’t to ignore it and hope it goes away — instead, she actively searches for solutions to manage it.
