It’s Not You. It’s Your Programming
Thankfully, we can re-program our brains.

I love learning about the brain and how it works. I am in the process of recovery from C-PTSD (Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), which I prefer to call C-PTSI (Complex Post Traumatic Stress Injury), because I believe the brain doesn’t necessarily have a disorder but was injured from past traumas.
I think it is more stigmatizing to use the word disorder, so I choose not to.
Learning about the underlying subconscious causes of why the brain thinks the way it does, is a major key for me in my recovery program.
I just listened to a podcast with the wonderful author/scientist Bruce Lipton who writes about trauma, science and the brain.
In a nutshell his book said:
‘In the first seven years of our life we are in state similar to a dream and we function mainly through our subconscious mind. And if we have a challenging childhood, our subconscious mind wrecks havoc onto us. This also changed our body chemistry which changes our thoughts.’
The good news is this:
…if you change your THOUGHTS, you change your CHEMISTRY, you change your SUBCONSCIOUS.
SUBCONSCIOUS VS CONSCIOUS BRAIN

So, we all might have two brains working simultaneous. The subconscious and conscious. Within the word SUBconscious, the SUB means below. BELOW your conscious mind lies the UNCONSCIOUS or SUBCONSCIOUS .
Our CONSCIOUS mind is powerless to the SUBCONSCIOUS mind until we learn to respect the programming and begin to understand and respect the subconscious mind. Carl Jung wrote about this topic. He believed that:
‘…what remains unconscious does not dissolve, but rather resurfaces in our lives as fate or fortune…’
In other words unconscious patterns, until we bring them into the light do not fade away on their own, but, rather, are stored in our unconscious and are likely to keep repeating .
We automatically DEFAULT to our negative programming despite how hard we try to do better, or think better. Ok. Ok. This was important for me to learn.
Avoiding or hiding from our emotions is not the answer, says the wonderful coach and teacher Lisa Romano:
“It is not us that is ill or wrong it is just our PROGRAMMING. The fate of cells is determined by environment not by genes, but — we can heal it!”
HEALING THE MISINFORMED BRAIN

We must learn to sift through the crappy and disempowering programming we got from our childhood but the great news is that it is possible.
This is powerful stuff. I am so excited to have found all of this out now. I am committed in my recovery program, to heal the injured or misinformed parts of my brain.
Part of this process is naming and recognizing our Core Beliefs. (I realized my Core Beliefs might actually have been totally wrong from my childhood.)
We’ve all been programmed to believe many Core Beliefs and that programming has been lodged into our subconscious brains.
I decided to make a list of all my Core Beliefs. I recommend you do this too. It really helps to see it all out on paper.
Here are a few of my CORE BELIEFS:
- I am not safe in the Unvierse.
- The world is scary and I need to figure out a way to be safe.
- I’m not quite enough the way I am.
So, we were literally programmed to behave the way we were programmed by our parents and their parents parents. Makes sense.
It’s a hereditary/generational thing, which might’ve even been passed down through our DNA!

I am reading about this now in a book called ‘It Didn’t Start With You’. This book looks at the history of our families and how things are genetically passed down. The main reason I picked it up was this book explanation:
‘This book focuses on identifying inherited family patterns-the fears, feelings, and behavior we’ve unknowingly adopted that keeps the cycle of suffering alive from generation to generation — and so HOW TO END THE CYCLE…’
Here is an excerpt:
‘…the answer may not lie within our own story as much a in the stories of our parents, grandparents and even our great grandparents. The latest scientific research tells us that the effects of trauma can pass from one generation to the next. Aka ‘inherited family trauma’.
But, pain does not always diminish on its own or diminish with time.
So this book is stating the same thing as other studies about inherited family trauma. Similar to the statement: It’s not you-it’s your programming.
The reasons we do, think and feel what we feel are related to long-term memory.
The human brain is designed to prioritize trauma and unmet needs from childhood. This prioritizing as well as storing of information can arrest the adult mind, body, and soul outside of conscious awareness.
NOW WHAT? HOW DO WE BREAK THIS CYCLE?
As our awareness of the problems expand so too does our awareness of our Divine Self. Divine self is NOT your programming. To heal is to reprogram what has been. We must refuse to inherit dysfunction and learn new ways of living instead of repeating what we have lived through.
“Much of our SUBCONSCIOUS MIND was working on auto-pilot to survive the situation.” LISA A. ROMANO
Your programming is not you. Its not you that needs to be fixed.
You are still an innocent being regardless of what has been, regardless of what you have done and thought. The only thing that separates you from merging and integrating that Divine Being is the PROGRAMMING.
Sometimes our parents, are unable to connect to themselves so they failed to be able to connect to us and because they failed to connect to us we were damaged, knowingly and unknowingly. I’m choosing to think this was ‘unknowing’ because I don’t believe my parents did these things to me ‘purposely’.
(In other words, was this programming done to you Unintentionally or Intentionally?) This is something I have been pondering with my therapist lately. It seems that my parents damage was done UNINTENTIONALLY which is great to discover.
Because we were never taught that we were enough, some people have been seeking a sense of validation our entire lives. That’s not our fault. It is right to seek validation when we are children.
‘..in order to heal we must learn to believe that we are enough, and when we learn to believe that we are enough we heal.’
Oh my god!! Once we KNOW and acknowledge our shit, we are no longer a victim.
We are aware now.
We are adults now so we get to choose to continue with the old programming from the SUBCONSCIOUS (or unaware) mind or the CONSCIOUS (aware) mind — or learn a new program!

“We cannot change the past, but we can change our perception of the past and we can learn to understand and appreciate what went wrong“.
So, my life goal now, at age 56 is to reprogram myself and be patient as I learn how to do this. I am in a great Recovery program. I have a therapist and a few wonderful spiritual teachers/coaches who are invaluable. I am super grateful for all of them. I call them my S*W*A*T team (Supportive Women Acknowledging Truths). If you’re a male you can find a male team I’m sure.
I do know that it is my life mission now to become aware. BECOMING AWARE IS KEY. Noticing and observing myself is vital without guilt or judgement. This part is the most important!
Noticing and observing the voices from my childhood programming that might not even be MINE is the first step.
When the mind begins to understand whats wrong it has the ability to think different thoughts. But whats wrong needs to be objectified. Yea. So I like to look at it all objectively now saying to myself :
“WOW You’ve been programmed and now it’s time for the reprogramming process’.
If you spend the time to reprogram your subconscious you can rewrite programs and re create your life.
Then you have a chance to awaken.
