Still Life, With Migraine

In which the author complains about a limitation.

I had my first migraine when I was thirteen. Mitzvah! The family was visiting San Antonio, and we had dinner at a restaurant on the Riverwalk. I do not recall what led up to it. I do remember being in so much pain after that dinner that my dad pulled over in front of a church, Methodist, thank you very much, and I threw up on the lawn there. The next one I remember was ninth grade. That was the first time I experienced visual aura. As I stumbled to the nurse’s office, my vision deteriorated and closed down to some sort of tunnel vision…
