The Benefits of Animal-Assisted Therapy

Kay, a woman who endured a childhood of relentless abuse and neglect, shared in our therapy session the heartbreaking news of her cat’s sudden death. Her beloved pet proffered the sort of consummate devotion and tenderness that humans in her life failed to provide. During times in which she was deprived of safe human touch, it was her cat who assuaged feelings of emptiness and loneliness by providing love and physical affection. This constant tender bond not only promoted a sense of well-being, it also lowered cortisol levels so that stress was more manageable. Hence it goes without saying, given that this was a corrective bond that sustained her through the best and worst of times, Kay’s grief is profound.
