Although the concept of the metaverse has been around for several decades, albeit the current iteration, driven by advancements in technology like virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), blockchain and AI gained significant attention in the 2020s, I am not a tech savvy person. Truth be told I have apprehensions about computer intelligence performing tasks which typically require human intelligence. So it’s understandable that aside from lacking the aptitude to comprehend the complexity of neural networks that I would have legitimate fears about the trajectory of ‘thinking’ robotics.

How automation will replace human jobs, leading to unemployment and economic instability, along with how personal data is collected, stored, and used and whether it could be misused or lead to surveillance is unnerving to consider. Furthermore, it’s unsettling to contemplate how the inadequate regulation of AI systems impacts its use in warfare, the creation of deepfakes, healthcare, transportation and finance.

Undoubtedly, although there are substantial potentials for AI to be used in manipulative or malicious ways, it is here to stay.
