Our consciousness includes all of the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors within our awareness. What about the part of us that we can’t readily access?

The most intriguing part of the human psyche is what lies underneath — the part of ourselves that is pushed away or inaccessible to us. Freud considered the mind as an iceberg, with the most important parts of our mind being unseen.

Underneath our awareness lies the unconscious — the untapped mind and deeper mental processes. The unconscious mind includes all of our past memories and experiences. Our urges, thoughts, feelings, especially unpleasant or unacceptable parts of ourselves.

Here are some truths about our unconscious:

We Aren’t the CEOs of Ourselves:

Remember the movie Inside Out by Pixar? While we don’t have little people living in our heads storing our memories and emotions, we do have similar brain processes that we aren’t privy to.

Most of the brain’s processing occurs on an unconscious level — The Passive Frame Theory. We aren’t really aware of what our brains do on a daily basis.
