Koalas sleep up to twenty hours a day. And they seem to live a stress-free lifestyle. On the contrary, a third of humans have sleep problems. And this can have dire consequences.

The average adult requires between seven and nine hours of sleep each night. Anything less than seven hours is regarded as “sleep insufficiency.” Yet, according to the CDC, 35.2% of US adults report that they usually get less than the recommended amount of sleep.

Why Do You Need Sleep?

The quality of your sleep directly affects your mental and physical health and impacts your life — perhaps more so than any other factor. Sleep quality affects productivity, emotional balance, brain and heart health, immune system, creativity, vitality, and your weight.

Long-term effects of sleep deprivation have been linked to the development and management of several chronic diseases and conditions. These include type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and obesity.

One hour can make an enormous difference. A person who sleeps less than six hours a night has a 13% higher mortality rate than one who has the recommended seven to nine hours a night.
