A Simple Breathing Exercise to Get You Through Your Hectic Day

My son taught me about milkshake breathing, and I use this technique daily now

A few years ago, my son came home from school ecstatic about what he had learned.

He wanted to tell me about milkshake breathing. Lars has always been afflicted with anxiety attacks that come out in the form of frustrated meltdowns. He hates breaking down into tears in front of his teachers and classmates, but he seemed helpless to do anything about it. We all were.

Lars saw councillors and had extra teaching aid assistance. We worked on calming techniques at home and tried to open up our communication with our son as much as possible, so he would always feel comfortable talking about his feelings.

Although we saw slow and steady growth as Lars matured, the attacks were still happening regularly.

“It’s called milkshake breathing,” my son told me, “it’s the idea that you take a breath in through your nose and breathe out slowly into an imaginary cup of milk.”

“Okay,” I began. The idea seemed foreign to me.

“So then as you’re blowing slowly out, you imagine that the slower you blow, the bigger the bubbles in the milk will get. Your goal is to blow the biggest…
