Systems are upgraded through a process called innovation.
Innovation begins with observation. Observation leads to inspiration. Inspiration leads to design. Designs get built. Builds get tested, then released. Releases get used. Use leads to feedback. Feedback leads to incremental improvements in the design, and the cycle starts over again.
This feedback loop can go on indefinitely.
