If you ever wondered how to make tomorrow different from the latter days — the message is clear; travel for a proper meal.

Simple as that, treat yourself with some decent breakfast in a place, which at first does not ring a bell. Explore the tourist-unspoiled city of Kosice which has the food culture tremendously developing. Many new coffee shops, bistros and restaurants have sprung up in the city and so we have checked, how the local breakfast culture is doing.

This is our choice of 5 best spots you just have to try.

1. Dobré Bistro

On Monday morning, we started our week-long journey in Dobré Bistro, located on Garbiarska Street in a very pleasant neighbourhood not far from the city centre. The interior of the bistro is not large but designed with taste, combining exposed brick with turquoise accessories. We chose Eggs Benedict from their breakfast menu and were rewarded by a visually pleasing meal — poached eggs on spelt sandwich bread, with dried ham, baby spinach and hollandaise sauce. Friendly and helpful staff, delicious food and coffee and the interior itself were well worth the price, which was slightly higher than average (€ 6.90).

2. Raňajkáreň Rozprávka

Our selection would hardly be complete without a place whose name literally means ‘the Fairy-Tale Breakfast Place’. It is located right in the historical city centre, on the Hrnčiarska Street, also known as the Crafts Lane. The street is also home to a herbalist, potter, silversmith and a carpenter, as well as several coffee shops and restaurants. ‘Rozprávka’ is a cosy place, mostly furnished with wood. We decided to try baked tortillas with spinach, cheddar and sun-dried tomatoes for a very pleasant price (€2.99). We and enjoyed the food as well as the unique, fairy-tale-like interior.

3. Gesto Cafe & Brunch

Half-way through our journey, we stopped at Gesto Cafe & Brunch, the only place on our list not located in the city centre. However, its location on Námestie L. Novomeského is still very accessible and suggests a positive trend of decentralisation. The interior of Gesto is full of light, airy and very well thought out.

Our choice of ‘Gesto breakfast menu’ proved to be an excellent one. For € 4.90, we got 2 plates — one with eggs, bacon and sausages and the other one with toasts, butter, jam and vegetables. Drinks were also a part of the menu and we decided to opt for hot cocoa. We also tried pancakes with maple syrup and fruit and the food as well as the staff and the place itself were top notch.

4. San Domenico

San Domenico is a small coffee shop in Dominikánske Námestie, combining contemporary design with location right in the heart of the historical city centre. From spring until late autumn, it is surrounded by a busy market place, which adds to its unique character.

From the breakfast menu, we picked ‘Sweet breakfast bagel’ with organic butter and homemade jam (€ 3.20) and banana bread with homemade Nutella (€ 2.95). The typical Jewish pasty from Poland is well-known in New York but not so easy to find in Košice. It was nice to find it here, on San Domenico’s unique menu.

5. Pogo urban caffe

The most recent addition to Košice coffee shops, Pogo urban caffe is conveniently situated directly on the Hlavná Street. Its spacious interior has been designed with great precision and emphasis on maintaining the urban character of the place. The bicycle decorations on the walls seemed a bit redundant to us, but in spite of that, this coffee shop is a very pleasant place to have breakfast.

Since Pogo spreads seem to be especially popular, we decided to give them a try and it was well worth it. We tried the sheep cheese spread (€ 1.90) and the omelette with cherry tomatoes, cheese and mushrooms (€ 4.90). The food was delicious and so was the morning atmosphere at Pogo.
