About D.R. Horton

D. R. Horton (DHI) is a national home builder with headquarters in Dallas/Fortworth, Texas. Since 2002, D. R. Horton is ranked #1 builder in the USA demonstrating their leadership in residential development through design innovation, superior craftsmanship, and responsiveness to the needs of its customers.

Challenge

D. R. Horton approached Invonto to assist in improving their system for managing construction projects and monitoring scheduling activities. The legacy system was hindering D.R. Horton from scaling their growing construction business. Therefore, they needed a new, scalable construction scheduling software for their internal employees and vendors.

Objectives

Process

During our discovery stage, we worked with D.R. Horton’s team to learn about their business processes, challenges with their legacy software, and long-term strategic goals. Based on their business objectives, we defined a collaborative construction scheduling software that could help D.R. Horton plan, assign, and manage scheduling activities between their field employees, back-office staff, and vendors.

D.R Horton’s new application

Solution #1: Construction Scheduling Software for Enterprise Cloud

We concluded D.R. Horton’s new construction scheduling software should deliver two digital experiences — a collaborative cloud-based solution and a field service mobile app. Each solution would provide a collaborative work environment to manage various aspects of D.R. Horton’s homebuilding lifecycle. As part of solution implementation, we migrated D.R. Horton’s data from their legacy project scheduling software to the new cloud-based scheduling application. Additionally, we integrated new digital products with their sales and accounting system to deliver a seamless workflow.

  • User login and role management ensuring secure access to confidential business data
  • Management for all types for construction projects including single family homes and multi-unit buildings
  • Setup and manage hierarchical data for regions, divisions, community, and lots
  • Creating home construction templates with option selections and configurations specific to each plan
  • Vendor access and participation to improve the construction process
  • Manage punch lists and track construction issues
  • Ability to export and import data for efficient software implementation
  • KPI reporting that improved business processes and data forecasting
  • Email notifications and messaging capabilities for improved team communication
D.R. Horton’s field service application increased employee productivity by more than 18%

Solution #2: Field Service Application for Mobile

The custom mobile application allowed field users to manage their tasks using a smartphone device even while being disconnected from the internet. The offline feature was extremely crucial for D.R. Horton’s field employees who spent most of the day at construction sites. This field service application improved collaboration between field and back-office employees which increased employee productivity by more than 18%.

  • User login and role management ensuring secure access to sensitive business data
  • Plan and monitor construction activities
  • Punch lists and issue tracking
  • Capture job site photos
  • Collaboration with back-office staff
  • Stay productive and work offline without network connectivity

Results

The new construction scheduling software applications helped D.R. Horton’s team effectively manage construction schedules, shorten the timeline of project delivery, and save over $50 million each year in operational costs. This digital construction initiative paved way for other digital products such as warranty programs, homeowner portal, and land surveying; transforming decades of manual processes into digital solutions.
