Getting Your API Key from Alpaca

Alpaca is a US based brokerage firm heavily focussing on quant investing. They currently offer equities as well as data APIs.

Alpaca supports both paper as well as live accounts. We strongly recommend trying out the paper account (as well as getting API keys and secrets for the paper account).

In order to get your API Key and Secret, follow the steps below:

Step 1: Go to Alpaca website https://alpaca.markets/ and login

Step 2: Once you login, Go to paper account

Step 3: Your API Key and API Secret will be located on the right side of the screen. Click on View.

Step 4: If you have already generated your API Key and Secret before, it will appear here. If you haven’t generated. If not, “Generate New Key” option will be available

Step 5: Once you generate API Key, an API Key ID and Secret Key will be generated. Please store both of these as they are confidential. DO NOT share API keys and secrets with other people.

API Secret will be generated only once when you generate the key. In case you forget API Secret, both key ID and Secret will have to be regenerated.

You will need API Key and Secret for live account as well.
