White Paper Guided Reading, Part II: Personal Cloud Storage and Distributed Backup Functions of the ioeX

We’ve introduced two leading roles of the ioeX–bootstrap nodes and peer nodes for establishing the “decentralized network” and the hybrid blockchain consisted of public blockchain and consortium blockchain — in the last guided reading “How to Integrate ioeX Network with Blockchain”; the former is to provide services and the latter is to provide reward mechanisms.

This article is an extension of the decentralized network and it focuses on the two functions provided by the ioeX network: personal cloud storage and distributed backup.

Personal Cloud Storage and Distributed Backup

Document storage and backup must rely on the third party cloud service in the past, and we need to use dropbox, iCloud, or google drive for document storage, and AWS, Alibaba Cloud are dominating the market of backup service.

Decentralized network is a solution to this dilemma. The network is formed by bootstrap nodes and peer nodes; users no longer need to purchase space from the third party because the two complement each other.

  • Bootstrap node has a static IP address, it can be found and accessed easily which facilitates the relay function; it is similar to the server node in the network.
  • Peer node refers to the smart device that we use in daily lives; it has storage ability and can share storage space.

Based on the inherited storage ability of the peer node, the ioeX network uses device direct link structure for data transmission, while the data storage is based on the InterPlanetary File System/IPFS.

  • Personal Cloud Storage: personal cloud storage and transmission functions are based on the direct link transmission between devices and the fact that users are able to manage the files in the storage space.

How to overcome the security issue?

ioeX proposed a network communication structure: F2F (friend to friend), which requires nodes in the DHT network to be friends to enable the P2P direct link transmission; not only it improves the reliability of the file but also makes it harder to perform DDOS attack for the hackers.

For instance, when booting up the smart speaker in home and connects to the Internet, it will search the most suitable bootstrap node to be its relay and perform direct link transmission with those peer nodes that it has been friends with.

The bootstrap node it connects to each time is not necessarily identical, every time when it is rebooted and connects to the Internet, the access to the network is a random choice, which is also the concept of “decentralizing” of the ioeX.-

  • Distributed Backup: other than the personal cloud functions, backup of document is also crucial, and the process has to be secure and retrospective.

The ioeX therefore introduces IPFS to establish distributed backup functions.

For example, when performing cloud backup of the data in your phone in the ioeX network, the data will be segmented, duplicated, and then backed up in various peer nodes, and it can be searched any time to allow users to manage or delete their files in the personal cloud storage space easily.

Progressive Double-Layer Solution: Let ioeX Network Become the Super Virtual Server

To be a super virtual server it must have the functions of the Internet access, application, update, storage and backup, which is also the expectation of the ioeX itself.

ioeX doesn’t look for a shortcut to success. It’s marketing strategy is divided into two parts: personal cloud storage and distributed backup. It will enter the market progressively and proceeds the initial verification.

In the first stage, for increasing the network transparency, the network must be distributed widely; therefore, other than all the nodes joined from all over the world, the ioeX will also offer seed nodes for the network to run smoothly.

When the network can run stably, it means that smart device providers can deliver the upgrade kit software to the network; the software will be stored in partial peer nodes and will have an independent download address.

Thus, when the device providers send update notification to the smart devices, these devices may connect to any of the address in the address list provided by the providers; through making friends with the seed nodes, these devices can proceed verification automatically and direct link download, upgrade is then completed.

The personal (private) cloud storage and transmission method can replace the conventional OTA download with merely cloud storage address.

In the second stage, ioeX will further optimize the download speed and enhance the document privacy.

The introduction of IPFS distributed backup can work its magic in this matter.

For instance, when device providers need to perform online updates, the update document will be segmented and stored separately into different cloud storage.

When I’m notified to upgrade, I just need to search API through the network and I can search and use the content address, the segmented update document will be restored and update will be completed.

In the near future, smart device market will achieve exponential growth, with the ioeX decentralized network, IoT service providers and consumers will see how the cost of online update is hugely reduced due to the lower costs in development, setting, and rental; moreover, you don’t need to pay for storage space and download traffic anymore.

Don’t forget, these costs can influence the survival of IoT service providers and quality of post-sale services for the consumers under the conventional OTA update approach.

In the blueprint of ioeX, the decentralized network will be distributed worldwide one day and continues to optimize, to integrate the ability of computing, storage, and internet access of massive nodes into a cloud computing platform.

The broader the network, the stronger the platform efficacy; just as a super virtual server, the platform supports more applicable services and a much more diverse digital living ecosystem.
