Up the first hill of the roller coaster
Crossing First Threshold
I’m on the train to downtown to my first Mobile Makers class. I’m excited and nervous. And I feel so much like a newbie right now.
I have only taken the train one other time about 2 weeks ago. I ran into the dad of my daughter’s best friend at the train station. Luckily I did, because while talking to him, I followed him to the correct platform (the one that every one else was on) and the opposite platform than the one I took the first time. I am about 90% sure if I didn’t run into him, I would have went to the same platform I did last time and looked across at the 30 people on the other platform, wondering if they were all headed to the last stop away from the city and if I was the only one going into Chicago. I’m glad I arrived early to run into him and figure that out.
Then on the train, while sitting typing this, the conductor came by looking at tickets. Last time I just showed my monthly pass. This time, the conductor looked at me funny and said “I’ll come back to check that”. As I looked up at all the other passengers, I could see they all had their tickets pinned nicely in front of them. So, I pinned my ticket on the chair in front of me too. Learned 2 things today, so far.
There was a post on the Facebook page where a previous student wrote a blog post about every day at Mobile Makers. He wrote about everything they learned. I’m hoping to do the same. Maybe I’ll be able to do it on my train ride home every day. Probably a good time to reflect and decompress.
I’m expecting to learn a lot of other things today. I’m getting my mindset prepared to fail. A lot.
I’m excited. I’m nervous. I feel like a newb.
This is going to be great.
Update: just finished my first day. I’m going to create a separate post about the technical things I learned and did. For now, I’m just grateful to be on the train home at a decent hour. The first of not very many I’m sure.
On the train, I ran into my daughter’s BFF’s dad again. Small city. While talking, we were hushed twice and were told we were in the Quiet Car. What a fitting cap to a newbie’s first day.
