The third edition of the Blockchain Education Hackathon, known as “HIVEHack2023,” was successfully co-hosted by Kindai University’s Moriyama Laboratory and IOST. This exciting event, centered around the joy of programming and innovation, spanned two days, commencing on November 24, 2023, at the Kindai University Academic Theater. Kindai University is renowned for attracting highly motivated students who are passionate about innovation. Notably, this hackathon received support from companies committed to advancing Web3 education, including OKCoin Japan, DApp development infrastructure provider Bunzz, and EverSystem.

To commence the event, Professor Moriyama of Kinki University provided an introductory session on blockchain technology. Additionally, Mr. Kosako, a graduate student of the Moriyama Laboratory who has since become a Web3 full-stack engineer, presented applications and projects from previous hackathons that have harnessed the potential of blockchain technology.

Further enriching the educational experience, Mr. Ito, a Solution Architect Engineer from Bunzz, conducted a comprehensive course and hands-on session on smart contracts. Mr. Ito’s extensive involvement in prominent Web3 projects added valuable insights to the discussion, increasing students’ enthusiasm. During this session, students delved into the intricacies of smart contracts, creating wallets, and issuing tokens using Bunzz. This preparation effectively readied them for the upcoming hackathon challenges.

The hands-on session on IOST smart contracts followed, led by Mr. Shirahama, a blockchain engineer from EverSystem. Mr. Shirahama, an alumnus of the Moriyama Laboratory’s graduate program, has actively supported the IOST developer community since 2018. In the developer-friendly environment of IOST, students gained practical experience in blockchain technology, with a focus on smart contracts that support JavaScript. This session empowered them with tangible skills and knowledge in the blockchain field.

During the first day of the educational hackathon, teams strengthened their collaborative dynamics while enjoying pizza and sushi — a unique feature of this event designed to reward the students’ hard work. In the cozy cafe area of the Academic Theater, students engaged in lively discussions with industry professionals from OKCoin Japan, Bunzz, and EverSystem. This setting fostered learning and collaboration and created a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere for all participants.

The hackathon provided a platform for dynamic discussions between students and Web3 industry engineers, channeling innovative ideas toward product development. Four student teams, leveraging their expertise and interests, embraced the challenge of developing four distinct products guided by seasoned engineers from the Web3 sector. An essential objective of this hackathon is to sustain the development of these projects beyond the event’s conclusion. Students are enthusiastically committed to creating products that enhance campus interactions or contribute to their graduation research, offering practical solutions within their academic community.

The event will continue on its second and final day, promising even more excitement and innovation.

About IOST

High fees and slower transaction times on the Ethereum network have left the door open for new solutions to emerge, and IOST is one such project that has been gaining traction since its mainnet launch in 2019.

Backed by significant financial and VC firms such as Sequoia, Matrix, and ZhenFund, IOST is a pioneering decentralized, high-throughput, gas-efficient Proof-of-Believability-powered smart contract platform built to tackle the scalability trilemma once and for all. For this, the concluding ranking from China’s CCID ranked IOST as the best blockchain platform under Basic Technology, better than Ethereum, EOS, and every other smart-contracting platform evaluated by the agency. This is a testament to the quality and ability to roll out a better, innovative product and reflects our genuine desire to be the best in the sphere.

Being one of the public chain leaders in adoption, performance, and utility, IOST remains committed to our mission to unleash the power of blockchain.
