IOST Co-Founder & CTO Lectures at the University of Zurich Blockchain Summer School
International Summer School Program hosted by the Blockchain Center at the University of Zurich (UZH), Switzerland, has started that from July 6, 2020, for three weeks until the 24th. ”Deep Dive into Blockchain ” sponsored by the IOST Foundation. More than 60 students from around the world are participating in the program.
In January 2020, IOST Foundation’s relationship with the UZH Blockchain Center started off with a visit by Co-founder &CTO Terry Wang to the Blockchain Center at the University of Zurich. Professor Tessone, the Center’s Academic Director (Currently Chairman) and Terry, has signed an MOU for academic-industry collaboration in the blockchain space.
As part of the MOU, co-founder CTO Terry would lecture as an industry expert alongside university professors at the UZH Blockchain Summer School program.
Professors from University of Zurich(UZH), Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich(ETH), UK, Ireland, Australia, and South Korea, as well as industry experts from Distributed Ledger Technology (DTL) or platform such as Web3Fundation, NEO, Polkabot, IOTA, CARDANO,Hyperledger and IOST, provides knowledge of decentralized technologies, smart contracts, Security, economics, community building, mining markets, basic engineering of tokens, Lecture on Governance.
Terence Wang, CTO, Co-Founder of IOST, conducted an online lecture to over 50 students
Terry introduced himself as Prinston University graduate and stayed as Research (distributed storage, etc.) and Faculty Assistant ( (Algorithms & Data) at his university. He worked as a software engineer at Microsoft and Uber in Silicon Valley. Continuing his interest in education and academia, he said, “If I hadn’t been with IOST, I could have put myself in academia”. The IOST’s decentralized mechanism might be designed as a combination of experience as a software engineer and an academic approach.
Before diving into IOST, Terry discussed the innovation of Bitcoin and the challenges of the consensus mechanism PoW, as well as the solution to the Byzantine General problem (each army is a node in the system, the message is likened to a transaction, etc.), a decentralized economic zone proposed by a person/group (unidentified) calling themselves Satoshi Nakamoto.
Terry then highlighted about scalability, using Ethereum as an example, explaining that the Casper project, which is moving from the current PoW to PoS, aims to solve the problem by sharding technology to work in pieces, and the Plasma project, which is a layer 2 solution, aims to solve the problem by sidechain technology, with the platform as the main chain.
He explained that the IOST platform’s unique consensus mechanism, “Proof-of-Believablity” (PoB), allows for scalability without the need for sharding or side-chaining, and that the IOST virtual machine is built on NodeJs and Chrome’s superior V8 base.
During the Q&A, questions from students and Professor Tessone asked about the liquidity of IOST tokens and how it differs from other platforms. Terry emphasized that nodes that participate in block generation, and even nodes that vote a small amount are also rewarded. The ecosystem created by a carefully calculated distribution system enables anyone to participate and achieves sustainable token liquidity.
Finally, the students work in groups on an assignment given by IOST. Starting July 6, during the summer program, students have learned an overview of blockchain, a Token engineering, regulation of the token economy, and actual use cases from platformers. We hope a great service will be born from the students participating in the summer school starting to develop on IOST.
Diving deep into the blockchain, this program assists and empowers the students in the University of Zurich to their future paths in the blockchain and crypto space.
On his Twitter, Terry posted his appreciation for the program as well as his idea to join more blockchain education programs in the future.
