On April 21, 2023, we announced the formal establishment of the IOST AI Labs, along with its distinguished team, which is composed of senior research experts in AI algorithms and large language models (LLMs), and IOST core developers. In the future, the IOST AI Lab shall catalyze the development of the IOST AI subchain and improve the research and development of related products.

AI: Accelerating Digital Innovation

Since the introduction of ChatGPT, there has been a surge of interest in the field of Artificial Intelligence worldwide. Companies across the planet are investing in the development of next-generation AI products similar to ChatGPT. The impact of AI on digital transformation has been significant, particularly in domains like image and speech recognition, data integration systems, predictive analytics, and automation. Consequently, AI innovation has become indispensable for the progression of the digital economy.

Technologically, breakthroughs have been made in AI, particularly in natural language generation, thanks to advancements in large language models, massive data training, and ultra-high-speed computing power.

From a market development perspective, hundreds of startups focused on application-layer research and development have emerged in Silicon Valley in recent months. Notably, OpenAI recently unveiled the GPT-4 version — a vast, multimodal model capable of analizing human emotions and cognition by reading “text + images”. This milestone signifies the official arrival of the AI era.

In summary, AI technology has gathered widespread attention and practical applications in fields such as smart city construction, intelligent medical system development, and digital factory transformation. AI has changed our traditional production and lifestyle patterns, enabling more feasibility and possibilities for content creation through “AI +”.

The Formal Establishment of the IOST AI Lab

At present, AI’s typical applications in Web3 mainly involve DeFi, blockchain gaming, NFTs, DAOs, and smart contracts. AI excels at efficiently and accurately processing massive data while extracting useful information. Web3, as the next-generation internet, features decentralization and high transparency.

The integration of blockchain and AI will usher in a new chapter in the evolution of the Web3 digital economy, bringing better market experiences and tangible benefits to enterprises and users. AI can help improve production efficiency, while blockchain enables fair distribution of value. Furthermore, AI can build audit capabilities for blockchain smart contract technology, while blockchain can regulate AI’s development and help in the expansion of AI products.

Since its founding in 2017, IOST has concentrated on core technological innovation and product applications within Web3, AI, and quantum computing, consistently adhering to the belief of empowering digital and intelligent innovation development through blockchain technology. IOST is constantly adjusting its ecosystem matrix, promoting digital infrastructure construction, and improving its international strategic layout.

To promote collaboration among IOST’s global developers and collectively establish an N+1 blockchain innovation ecosystem alliance, we established the IOST AI Lab to explore the future of blockchain + AI-powered Web3 intelligent innovation development. The laboratory team predominantly consists of senior research experts in AI algorithm and large language models (LLMs), along with IOST core technology developers. In the future, the IOST AI Lab shall catalyze the development of the IOST AI subchain and improve the research and development of related products.

The IOST AI Laboratory will establish multiple “specialized R&D teams” to endorse research and development in areas such as large-scale intensive computing, big data training, standardized service models, environmental state perception, computer audiovisual testing, biometric recognition, human-machine interaction models, and machine translation. The objective is to construct a comprehensive digital and intelligent AI application innovation platform, generating pertinent patents, industry standards, and product paradigms.

IOST’s AI Subchain —The AI Native Chain

Since its inception in 2017, IOST has been deeply immersed in blockchain, utilizing the V8 JavaScript engine, identical to Google Chrome, as the core for executing smart contracts. Building upon this foundation, numerous improvements suitable for the blockchain have been implemented. While ensuring performance, the mainnet’s correctness and security are also maintained. Moreover, developers can employ JavaScript, the world’s most prevalent language, to write smart contracts on the IOST chain. This has granted IOST a substantial developer community that persistently contributes to the IOST ecosystem in their respective domains, introducing increasingly popular dApps and user-friendly developer tools.

Following the mainnet upgrade in 2023, IOST 2.0 will feature higher throughput and usability, becoming a truly Web3.0 blockchain operating system. IOST 2.0 — The Merge. IOST will adopt the Beacon Chain + Smart Chain EVM compatible architecture, and both will communicate using the standard Engine API. Furthermore, IOST 2.0 will continue to evolve and upgrade multiple sub-chains, including general-purpose EVM smart contract chains and specialized sub-chains such as NFT chains, gaming chains, and AI Native chains.

As IOST’s AI subchain — “AI Native Chain” adopts a new mechanism called “Proof of Inference.” Under this mechanism, dApps can call deep learning inference in smart contracts, and these inference demands will be processed by the blockchain validators. When validators complete these inference tasks, they receive more rewards. This mechanism is essentially an upgrade to the Proof of Work protocol. Overall, the Proof of Inference mechanism provides a wider range of possibilities and higher efficiency for blockchain technology applications. It offers an efficient, private, and secure computing mechanism for various application scenarios, providing new development directions and opportunities for the future of blockchain technology.

The “AI Native Chain” has core technical advantages such as large model control, easy configuration, and decentralized trust mechanism, providing users with a series of AI solutions in real-time. To continuously improve the construction of the “AI Native Chain” ecosystem, we will cooperate with global ecosystem partners to jointly develop computing power systems, environmental deployment, data training, algorithm migration and optimization, and other technical services on the chain. The goal is to provide enterprises with a more convenient and secure “AI Empowerment New Engine” for digital transformation, intelligent upgrading, and integrated innovation. We will also launch the “IOST AI Star Plan”: providing free training, incubation, and other support for developers interested in joining the “AI Native Chain” ecosystem; offering a series of AI solutions, technical development guidance, and market resource connections for partners.

After the official establishment of the IOST AI Lab, we will focus on building and improving the “IOST AI Subchain” to attract more projects and teams that need “Blockchain+” empowerment and “AI+” efficiency enhancement to join the IOST ecosystem. In addition, IOST will create an “Artificial Intelligence as a Service” (AaaS) full-ecosystem service model, providing users with a simple, efficient, and end-to-end AI service platform.

IOST AI products will be released soon

In addition to building and improving the AI Native Chain, IOST will further promote the iterative research and development and application of IOST AI products (covering graphic creation, audio and video editing, design generation, and many other functions) to promote the efficient integration of traditional enterprises with blockchain and AI technologies, helping enterprises achieve true digital transformation and upgrading in terms of operational efficiency, cost reduction, and product quality enhancement.

During the initial stage of AI product development, we have built a blockchain + AI basic data platform that realizes the multi-dimensional and deep integration of blockchain technology and AI technology. We have completed relevant demos for AI products in areas such as drawing, video, and design. In addition, we have further improved the infrastructure construction and system operation mode of blockchain + AI, and tested the multi-cloud support and multi-chain support effects of some products multiple times. After completing the final public testing, we will officially launch the IOST AI product series.

IOST AI products will mainly involve data indexing, NFTs, blockchain gaming, DeFi, AI metaverse, AI DAO, and other popular fields, with the goal of providing enterprises and users with full-stack, multi-scenario blockchain + AI product services and solutions. We will continuously explore new technologies and new scenarios in the digital innovation development process of Web3.
