Following a series of workshops, which include a hands-on IOST Coding Masterclass jointly organized by two IOST Nodes — Institute of Blockchain and BlockDevsAsia, the National Blockchain Challenge kicked off on 14 June!

The National Blockchain Challenge is a 3-day blockchain hackathon supported by SkillsFuture Singapore, a government agency dedicated to workforce upskilling. The National Blockchain Challenge was held at Lifelong Learning Institute, an adult learning campus under SkillsFuture. Amazon Web Services is also a corporate partner for the event alongside IOST.

The National Blockchain Challenge had received huge public interest with close to 150 application sign-ups, and participants formed teams of 3–5 persons to ideate, build prototypes, and present at the end of the 3-day hackathon.

The enthusiasm and interest in blockchain from the Singapore developer community is highly encouraging, as we see competitor teams of all genders, races, and ages joining the hackathon.

From evergreen, seasoned businessmen looking to rejuvenate their traditional businesses with blockchain technology and new monetization models:

To children as young as primary school, brought by their parents to learn about the amazing potential of blockchain and new technology!

As corporate partners in the National Blockchain Challenge, IOST played our part in developing blockchain awareness and technology penetration in the public by sharing practical blockchain use cases, assisting in business ideation and providing coding assistance on-site.

Lawrence Lim, Head of Business Development at IOST, and Amadeo Brands, Co-founder of EOI Digital and Board Member of BlockDevsAsia (IOST Node), mentored participants in need of technical and business assistance, and subsequently also form part of the judging panel to identify the most promising blockchain projects arising from the hackathon.

It is gratifying to see the strong level of participant interest in developing on IOST, with Lawrence and Amadeo receiving numerous requests in setting up IOST wallets and in smart contract coding from the developers present.

With most of the developers choosing to code on either IOST or Ethereum for their choice of platform, we are pleased that IOST has taken yet another step towards driving greater developer awareness and adoption through a national level blockchain hackathon supported by government agencies.

Day 3 of National Blockchain Challenge: Demo Day!

With numerous quality applications, the panel of judges went through various presentations and demos and eventually chose 5 finalists to present on the final day of the hackathon, which was open for the public to attend, and receive excellent attendance and turnout.

Before the Demo Day begun, the crowd was treated to several insightful panel discussions, with guest speakers including successful tech entrepreneurs and tech leaders from GovTech Singapore overseeing national tech developments and initiatives.

The Demo Day kicked off with presentations and demos from the six finalist teams, and cover a dazzling array of disciplines spanning AI technology, cybersecurity, blockchain tokenomics design and implementation and zero knowledge proof privacy layers in their proposed solutions.

IOST was chosen by numerous teams to build on, including Gabriel Lau, the youngest finalist in the Demo Day:

It is our pleasure to see IOST being accepted as the blockchain platform of choice by budding and seasoned developers alike!

Following the solution demos and fierce debates between the judges to choose between a very competitive finalist pool, three winners emerged from the hackathon and shared cash and prizes worth over SGD3,000:

  1. Blockbusters team which uses blockchain to develop testbeds that can stress test cyberphysical national security (cyberphysical security refers to security of tech systems that are the backbone of physical national assets such as water supply);
  2. Patron Collections team which built a full fledged tokenomics design and prototype for influencers to reward supporters with unique digital assets;
  3. Freelancer Hub which created a unique token platform that enhances collaboration and reduces the friction between corporates and freelancers in the modern gig-economy.

Join The IOST Ecosystem!

Following the successful close of National Blockchain Challenge: Season 1, IOST congratulates all winning teams of the hackathon, and will continue to promote and drive awareness among developers on the merits of building on the IOST blockchain, as well as develop greater public awareness and adoption of IOST’s unique technology.

We welcome more developers and companies looking to build blockchain solutions to join our ecosystem, and the IOST Foundation will provide various business resources including technical assistance, marketing support, partnerships and networking opportunities to help you successfully launch your blockchain project.
