It is not the first time we say it: according to Gartner, in 2020 there will be more than 20 billion connected devices. And the fourth edition of the IoT Solutions World Congress (“IoT SWC18” hereinafter) in Barcelona was held on October 16th to 18th with this in mind.

IoT SWC18, which has already become a global reference for Industrial IoT, welcomed 16,250 visitors and 300 exhibitors this year. The Barbara IoT team was one of these.

Now, after the intense days of the IoT SWC18, we want to share with you our experience and impressions. But above all, we would like to highlight the positive experience that being present in this edition has meant for us.

The event

At IoT SWC18, Barbara IoT has presented its software platform consisting of a secure operating system (Barbara OS) and a remote management dashboard (Barbara Panel) for Industrial IoT.

This year, we decided to participate in the Spanish Pavilion with the support of ICEX and the organization of AMETIC. Thanks to this, during the three days of the show we had a large influx in our stand, in which we made more than 150 demonstrations to a varied audience composed of integrators, end users, developers and software manufacturers, all of them, with a clear professional market orientation. We should point out the high quality of the attendees and the conversations held with each one of those who approached our booth, which demonstrates the importance this event is getting on the B2B market.

Most of these discussions dealt with the main themes or hot topics of the event:

  • Security,
  • Industry 4.0,
  • Edge computing.

The ecosystem

The IoT market, as we understand it, has a strong ecosystem component. This is something we could see at the event, as a large number of companies of different sizes presented their work along with other firms, so they complement each other.

With this same philosophy, we introduced our Partnership Program to the media and potential partners with a great reception. We also shared experiences with our current partners who witnessed the availability of our new version of Barbara Panel, that includes new functionalities in the cybersecurity environment for devices, that guarantee updates during their whole lifecycle.

This has been fundamental, as our partners have had the opportunity to see how they can define new customizable services for both their target sectors and for specific customers.

On the other hand, we moved forward in the technological relations with other manufacturers which we are working with to offer complementary solutions. Surely, in the coming weeks, we will present some of these novelties.

Finally, another important aspect for us has been to be able to develop our international ecosystem given the characteristics of the event.

Within this ecosystem, we could see that, while last year everyone talked about proof of concepts, this year the central issues revolved around real projects and implementations.

Among the largest exhibitors, we noticed that there was a strong presence of cloud players such as Google, AWS and Microsoft. Within this group, we missed the presence of IBM, which was not present this year at IoT SWC18.

Moreover, in terms of operators, Vodafone is betting very strongly on NB-IoT and a testbed of a multitude of partners.

In a nutshell, the IoT Solutions World Congress 2018 has been a fully improved event over last year’s, in which the Barbara IoT team has had the opportunity to expand its market vision and gain access to a high-level audience both national and international.

Finally, we would like to thank AMETIC, ICEX and the whole Spanish Pavilion for their great professionalism. In this sense, we would like to highlight the cross-pitch session with the Austrian Pavilion that was of great interest to us.

For all that, we hope to continue participating in this type of events and return to IoT SWC again next year.
