Oppenheimer analyst Andrew Uerkwitz estimated that between 10 million to 12 million Alexa and Google Home devices were sold over the holidays. 4) The Intelligent Snowmelt System

Holland, Michigan, a town just off the eastern shore of Lake Michigan sees a lot of snow. But instead of relying on a network of snowplows, salting, and shovels, Holland diverts waste heat from a nearby power plant to run under the streets and sidewalks to melt the snow.

The Holland BPW snowmelt system takes waste heat from power generation and captures it to heat water, which circulates through 190 miles of tubing laying underneath the town. Pumping 4,700 gallons of water per minute at 95ºF, the system melts an inch of snow per hour. The system continues to expand, now covering over 5 miles of sidewalk and roadway…

5) Is Hajime the Solution to Mirai or the Next-Gen Botnet?

This week, new reports surfaced that Hajime worm has infected more than 300K devices. Discovered back in October of 2016, Hajime is believed to be a work of an white-hat hacker to combat the Mirai botnet. But as with the case with nematodes, is Hajime — and more generally cyber vigilante — problematic or a sufficient solution to IoT industry’s negligence on security?

Hajime may be combating Mirai, but Yitaek Hwang raises concerns about this “solution” to the Mirai botnet problem.
