STARNAME : from Wallet addresses to Self Sovereign Identity

Starname started a few years ago as a service to simplify complex blockchain addresses into a readable one. We were pioneering decentralised name service and embarking on a mission to simplify access to blockchain in general. With a readable address, there is meaning. Anything with a label can be categorised, organised, found and shared more easily.

As blockchain evangelists we want access to name service and identity management to be universal. Our domains are truly decentralised and acquiring a name will only cost a few cents for the most common names.

The Starname app is the tool that we created to help people buy and manage their *starnames. Focused on our mission to simplify access to blockchain, we made the onboarding process for non crypto people as easy as a few clicks. We support industry standards hard and cold wallets and you can even create your first *starname address with just a gmail address. We became accessible to people that didn’t know a thing about blockchain.

"Each profile represents what a Web3 user wants to be recognised for"

Each *starname has an associated profile. It’s easy to share and helps centralise some of your addresses, you can combine them under one domain with several accounts … In a nutshell, each profile represents what a Web3 user wants to be recognised for and what kind of crypto currencies he accepts. This is the premise of managing your online Web3 identity.

Is Starname a path from Self Sovereign identity to property in Web3?

We believe that Web3 identity is not solely about blockchain. Online, we can choose to be ourselves or an avatar, artist name, influencer, a hashtag, a wallet address, an NFT, … So many different scenarios that you want to be identified for. I have a passport accepted in customs, gym membership card accepted in this specific gym, I have social media handle and password to access Web2 identity and even a CryptoPunk or Bored Ape to access private Web3 communities. Identity is a broad term and we plan on supporting them all. They will each correspond to a *starname profile, where your identity will be shown, easily shared and understood.

"We believe that web 3.0 identity is not solely about blockchain, it should encompass everything"

Part of this effort to recognise any existing or future identity is the use of certificates. Nothing new, it’s actually one of the tools of Web2 identity management, only this time you can save it on-chain. With a certificate, you are showing an irrefutable link between a *starname and an authority proving that this Starname is owned by the identity represented by the certificate.

The release of on-chain certificates is a significant step towards Self Sovereign Identity. We've made it in a way that it's easy for any authority to sign them and link a digital asset to an identity.

This opens Starnames for businesses and will allow any company to enter the Web3 while maintaining a firm link to their identity.
