What at first appearances seemed to be a dilapidated ruin behind a rather large but plain red-stone wall (the new entrance to the Palace which once would have been located in the southern wing to the left of the main gate) turned into a fantastic adventure. The old ruins of Linlithgow Palace allows for hours of exploration through a warren of corridors, cellars and towers.

The ruins are huge. The statement it was intended to announce to the world is easily imagined. The 360 degree views from the towers of the town and countryside are a joy. The thrill of scurrying through a site where some of our favourite historical figures once conducted their daily lives is energizing — which is a necessity, there are a lot of steps to go up and down. And in the end a sombre realisation that time catches up with everything, be it powerful people or imposing buildings, ensuring life is put in perspective.
