A Fortress
Poetry — a deeper meaning
thoughts harbor in the head and dock
on days of insurmountable quiet
quiet not longed for that comes after dark
blissful wishing to hear another’s breath
alongside one’s body
life takes away the noise of companionship
replacing life with pressing silence that
bears the brunt of loss
keeping solitude by one’s side
a heart in a mirror unstoked and graven
in vicissitude
it matters not come morning
when the playful songs of birds filter in
through an open window
though one is traipsing in the room
for want of a companion that never comes
life is the fortress
not dependent upon one’s hopes and
dreams but fitting, waiting for one to
fight, to love and live, and have the will to survive
trudging onward to life’s deeper
meaning
where heaven leaves no clues
except for the chirping trills of warblers
the tune of happiness
for content leaves no sorrow
filling the unwanted quiet.
