Black house,
no lights on.
Inky sky of night —
a silent backbeat for
the fireflies’ plight.
Fighting to be seen
not for themselves,
but for their light.
Gentle tears from a moon
too afraid to be bright,
lest we see it all alone
amidst the starry sky.
Try and try,
and try as we might,
we can’t keep the fire alive;
if we could,
it wouldn’t be life.
