Ethan and Maggie
found out the hard way.

The hills behind
goodbyes have soft eyes;
they see things;
things like
her tongue dancing
behind her quivering
red lips as her teeth
fence the love breaching
the floodgates
of her skittish passion.

Ethan observed the happiness
that washed across Maggie’s face.

Maggie swore she
didn’t deserve love,
but infatuation subtly replaced
the desperation in her
depression.

Ethan untangled the lies that Maggie
alone among her middle-aged friends
were a lost cause.

Maggie’s gaze cracked
and the answer to his question
spread across her face.

They smiled
and she twisted her new ring.
