Like a surgeon

performing an open biopsy,

the young geologist

extirpates the golden tumor

potentially malignant

in fiat money value.

A note on the poem: Fiat money is a government-issued currency that is backed by a country’s government rather than by a physical commodity or financial instrument. For example, before becoming a fiat currency, British Sterling was protected by the gold standard until its suspension in 1931.
