Reciprocity

Drawing connection circles over time
Different shapes and sizes
The ones that come and go
The ones that last a lifetime
And the wisdom that comes with age
In recognising there is value of all of them
Whether giving or taking, both, either, neither
Among colleagues, acquaintances, friends
Among the inner sanctum and soulmates

Reciprocity
The practice of exchanging things
for mutual benefit
the concept of mirroring
the actions — behaviours and reactions — of others
a social norm to match like with like
indebted to repay gifts and favours
good (and bad)
push and pull in search of equilibrium
building sustainable (or damaged) relationships
with such exchanges
A legal contract
A moral obligation
A duty towards family, friends, community, country
An eye for an eye
Biblical

Sure, social solidarity has a home in a workplace
A foundation for effective collaboration and teamwork
It even makes sense among acquaintances
And some superficial friendships
Where common interest is aligned
Swaying to the sound of a musical hum
Sharing the rapture together

But ideal altruism is giving
with no expectation of future reward
and this is the immutable core of true friendship
