Ice has frozen over the lake
She looks out her frosted windows
The flakes falling gently from the sky
Trees collecting the fluffy puffs

She bundled up and ventured out
Shimmer snow reflecting the light
Crunching crisply underfoot
The cold wind whistling in her ear

Gathering the wood from the pile
Stacking it high in her arms
Turning her back and heading inside
Stoking the fire bringing it to life

Waiting ever so patiently
Her husband and child
Out in the winter’s chill
Hoping for their safe return

The hours pass slowly by
Snow accumulating quickly
Starting to worry
She paces about
Howling winds pick up speed

Night draws in and still, they’re gone
Full of sadness she waits by the door
Nodding off into a restless slumber

Footsteps slowly approach the door
Quietly entering the house
Laying down the child in the small bed
Adding wood to the dying flames
He scoops up his wife
Carrying her into their warm bed
