Where Did the Tears Go?

He blinks,
lashes moist and diaper sagging,
tiny fingers clenched into a fist.

A strangled cry breaks free,
and I pull him close,
feeling his heartbeat, and
his breath between sobs.

Oh, such disgust!
cries my little man, unable
to make sense of the world’s boundaries, and
the secret to his happiness

Nothing has changed.

Even as the years have multiplied into decades
the world remains as deep and unfathomable,
and unpredictable

Ah, adulthood!

One can only wonder:
if the world is unchanged, and
if the feelings remain,

Where did the tears go?
