The Week in #Iran Social Media

Top of the tops August 8–15

This week on Meidoon Watch : An Iranian Mathematician shoots for the stars and lands on the Supermoon. Rouhani brings the funny and the unprecedented tweet of the week. Bad news at the bottom.

Field’s Medal Awarded to Maryam Mirzakhani

Not a man’s world

You didn’t hear about this ?Right, you were under a rock.

This week, the Fields Medal ( a.k.a the Noble Prize of Mathematics) was awarded to a woman for the first time. Even better, it wasn’t just any old geeky lady, it was Maryam Mirzakhani! Maryam is a currently a professor at Stanford. She was educated at Tehran’s Sharif University, the hotbed of genii in Iran, as well as Harvard, the University that secretly lurks in everyone’s dreams.

And, as always, is there any topic that passes the Iranian social media without major historical-socio-political discussion and rants ?

Many are congratulating Maryam for her achievement, while many are criticizing the Iranian Government’s inability to fight the brain drain. The most interesting point is that many of her fellow genius friends ARE currently in Iran, and currently JAILED.

Further drama was instigated when Rouhani tweeted a congratulatory message for Ms. Mirzakhani which included a veiled and unveiled picture of her.

The unprecedented tweet garnered a loooooot of attention from everyone! Some were pleased with the fact that both pictures were included, while some were left wondering why the president may do such a thing.

Rouhani’s Farsi tweet noted that Iranians should be proud that one of their own has won the medal, but that left many Iranians wondering why she isn’t with them in Iran. Some are saying its better that she’s not here because she would probably be a school math teacher dealing with sex segregation and harassment.

Nonetheless , Everyone is proud of her for her historical achievement. I am personally absolutely uplifted by the news and refuse to be hassled with negativity.

Rouhani Asks Some People to Go to Hell, or Some Other Warm Place

More from Rouhani. Comedy of the week was provided by non-other than the President . I think the point will be best communicated if I take a stab at translating the comments :

یک عده به ظاهر شعار می دهند ولی بزدل سیاسی اند. هر وقت می خواهد مذاکره شود یک عده می گویند ما داریم می لرزیم. خب به جهنم! بروید یک جای گرم پیدا کنید برای خودتان. خداوند شما را ترسو و لرزان آفریده. ما چه کار کنیم؟”
Some people seemingly advocate for the talks, but they are cowards. Whenever we want to enter negotiations they say we are shaking! Go to hell! Go find a warm place for yourselves! God has made you cowards, its not ourproblem.

The gossipy MP’s of the parliament have gotten together in a secret meeting (well, not secret but unofficial) talking about how they don’t really find Rouhani’s comments cool.

Tehran Plane Crash Kills 39

we wish you a pleasant flight

The Iran-140 passenger plane flew for five long minutes before it crashed in the middle of a residential area. At least 42 people from the flight are dead as a result, and many are injured on the ground. The plane is made collaboratively between Ukraine and Iran, so there may be a chance that the black box may have to be sent to Ukraine for analysis.

People are outraged and saddened by the tragedy and are holding officials responsible for their lack of concern about safety standards. As a result of the tragedy, Rouhani called for a banning of the airplanes.

Read on the tragedy, here.
