Atlantic Salmon listed as endangered Irish species

A 60% decline in 40 years for wild Atlantic salmon

Biodiversity Ireland has listed wild Atlantic salmon amongst the 20% of wildlife species that is under threat in Ireland.

The salmon’s population has declined by 60% in the last 40 years with Biodiversity Ireland citing sea lice, ocean warming, overfishing, and pollution as some of the causes behind their decline.

Chairman of the Federation of Irish Salmon & Sea Trout Anglers (Fissta) Paul Lawton has reacted to the latest report in a statement, saying,

“It’s very very annoying to see report after report coming out telling us what’s endangered, here they are listing the causes and still our plonkers with the power do nothing.

“If I carried out a test in the Butler’s pool in Waterville to see what’s happening to the sea trout, part of the result is that sea trout running are small and full of sea lice.”
