Irish Shark on the Fly
It’s not the Bahamas, Costa Rica or Key West, but instead it’s the waters off west Cork.
FishinginIreland.info have reported details of a group of fly fishers from Germany, The Netherlands and Ireland who recently landed nine blue sharks up to 65lbs on the fly.
Rubby dubby bait mixture was used to get the sharks close to the boat. Broken rods, missed strikes and leaders breaking were part of the heartbreak before the first of the nine was hooked.
After 25 minutes the biggest shark of 60–65lbs was landed on the #12 outfit with a streamer fly of 25cm in length stripped back fast in the waters.
It was a remarkable weekend of fly fishing and shows once again the potential and choice of fish that can be caught in Irish waters.
The group were fishing on board Tom Collins’ boat ‘Loch an Iasc’, which sails from the Reen Pier near Union Hall.
