Irene Energy, part of the “Consommacteur” movement

The French have a word for everything. The last one that i’ve been hearing a lot recently is “consommacteur”, (consummactor in english). This reflects a consumer movement where consumers reclaims control over the goods and services they buy. People want to know what’s in their plate or what’s on their back. They want guarantees that fairness is a guiding principle throughout the supply chain. They also want to be able to check it for themselves and not rely on trust anymore. They want to become responsible consumers.

In France, a brand called “C’est qui le Patron- La marque du consommateur ”(Who’s the boss- the consumer’s brand) is creating the buzz. This consumer cooperative was set up as a response to the large negotiating powers of supermarkets leading to the ever-diminishing margins of agriculteurs. Another major reason behind it was the consumer’s need to know what’s in their food. The aim is to remunerate producers fairly and provide consumers with healthy products, using only quality ingredients excluding GMOs or additives commonly used to give a certain colour or consistency to products. By ensuring a fair remuneration for the producers, “C’est qui le Patron” brings back the fair trade concept to the developed countries. Major decisions are taken by the consumers, through a voting system: which product to sell next, in which packaging, what ingredients to use, where to source it from or in the case of animal products, what will their diet consist of.

Irene is part of this movement where consumers take control back and have a choice in what they buy. They demand more transparency which is precisely what Irene brings to the table.
