You hear tantra and you think sex. You’re not 100% wrong, but it’s so much more than that. I’ve recently become very interested in Tantra because — as I’ve come to realize — it’s the fulcrum of my spiritual philosophy and way of being in the world. It’s the body as spiritual.

No separation between the divine and the mundane. Lots of spiritualists talk about this, but most don’t practice it. Before we get into what Tantra even is, though, we have to talk about what it’s not.

Let’s Talk Duality

Many religions and traditions consider the spiritual realm to be something separate from the physical. They would say your body, the chair you’re sitting on, the TV you watch, the food you eat — it’s all part of the material realm here. And this is somehow separate or even opposite to what is spiritual over there. Or maybe, up there.

This happens across religions, so Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, Jains etc. all have dualistic cosmologies.

For Christians and Muslims, it’s Heaven and Earth. God is the creator, separate from His creation. For Buddhists, it takes the form of Matter and Mind. For many Hindus (Dvaita Vedanta)…
