Metaplex integrates Irys to ensure permanent, decentralized storage for NFTs minted and hosted on their platform

We are thrilled to announce that Metaplex has integrated Irys to ensure that NFTs minted and hosted on Metaplex are stored permanently on Arweave via Irys.

Metaplex is an open-source protocol that allows for the creation and minting of NFTs on Solana. It allows creators to easily launch self-hosted NFT storefronts and mint NFTs at a low price. It is comprised of two key components: an on-chain program and a self-hosted front-end web2 application.

Metaplex is the leading platform for NFT minting on Solana. With over 15 million NFTs minted on its platform, Metaplex has provided standards and tools for more than 100k projects and online communities. The Metaplex protocol is the standard for NFTs on Solana and their tools have enabled the Solana NFT ecosystem to be as robust and thriving as it is today.

Decentralized, permanent storage is critical for the NFTs ecosystem. While many NFTs are stored on decentralized data chains, they are not stored permanently. Arweave is the only way to permanently store data, and Irys makes it faster, more reliable, and easier to use.

There are many platforms that store their NFTs on traditional web2 centralized servers, however, this poses similar risks. Not only is the data less secure as it’s stored in a centralized hub, but it also forces users to trust a single entity to give them access to their data. Although rare, it’s possible for a company to deny access to your accounts or change permissions to make it more difficult to make account changes.

Additionally, the data is not stored permanently. If users do not pay every month for these services, their data can be deleted, including NFT metadata. Given the tremendous value that NFTs are driving in the Solana ecosystem, this is a huge risk for creators and developers. To address this issue, Metaplex uses Irys to store and protect its NFTs.
