Is Artificial Intelligence a Threat?

Stephen Hawking once said, “The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race”.

Like Stephen Hawking, many people are concerned about the existence of artificial intelligence (AI), saying how creating AI is humanity biggest mistake and want to stop the development of AI as soon as possible. As someone who is always skeptical about the existence of AI, I am interested in learning more about AI and how they will impact humanity future.

AI is a concept in computer science that goal is to give computers the ability to learn like humans, hoping to expand computer’s capability and open more opportunity for humans as we continue to explore the world. With AI’s ability to learn and evolve, it is arguably one of humanity most advanced technology of all time and that we should expect AI to become more powerful in the next decades or so as we continue to invest more resources into improving it. As AI is becoming more advanced, more people will start to think that the movie Matrix is real and AI will become killer robots like in the movie Terminator and take over the world. As a result, society will start to oppose the development of AI looking at the good aspects of it and make sure that AI is strictly regulated.

As AI continues to grow, it is possible that AI will take over many American jobs and increases in the unemployment rate in the United States. This issue is discussed in the NYT article “Most Americans See Artificial Intelligence as a Threat to Jobs” by Niraj Chokshi. The article talks mostly about AI applications and how much we have been relying on AI to do everyday tasks. Chokshi also explains how AI will increase the unemployment rate and upset many Americans in the future as more and more companies will start to invest in AI applications to maximize their profit and efficiency. This article illustrates one good possible example as to why AI is dangerous to humans and that they should regulate more strictly.

One possible counter-argument to why AI is not dangerous to humans is by arguing how AI can open more possibilities to humans future. This idea is further explained in the NYT article “Five Artificial Intelligence Insiders in Their Own Words” by Justin Buell, which talks about why everyone should think AI as a good thing and that we should invest more in AI to open more possibilities to human survival in the future. Buell throughout his article explains the useful aspect of AI and how it can solve a complex problem that we human cannot do such as identifying cancer, analyze complex space behavior which could be very beneficial humans. Buel also explains how AI can only follow instructions that it will pose no threat to humanity as long as we used it correctly. Since AI has no thinking process and it can only do things that the programmers want them to do. In this case, the programmers are the people responsible for the AI invasion if that is ever going to happen, other than that the chance of AI invading is almost zero.

With the rise of AI, machines now have become more powerful than ever since they now gain the ability to learn like humans. With the current AI we have, it is unlikely that AI will pose any threat to humans anytime soon since they can only do basic stuff and that it is not as smart as humans which means AI cannot replace humans and is almost harmless to society. Instead of looking AI as a threat to human, we should be glad about the existence of AI as it creates more opportunities for us to learn about the world and brighten the darkness that we haven’t yet discover about our universe.
