Taking the digital marketing world by storm, Lauren has brought her expertise to some of Silicon Valley’s strongest digital companies including SalesForce, Sysomos, and AdRoll.

Today, Lauren is at Box, Inc. and oversees a portfolio of work that ranges from global campaigns and demand generation to marketing operations, brand services, creative services, and everything in between — including the Seven Swans a-Swimming.

If I want to get into digital marketing, where can I start? Do you have any tools, networking groups, or books you can recommend?

There are so many great digital marketing websites to help you learn more. Here are some of my favorite:

Share a piece of career advice that has stayed with you and continues to serve you now.

A manager once told me that you take pieces of everyone you’ve ever worked for. It’s like a stained glass window with each person you’ve worked for making up a pane.

For me this really emphasizes that who you work for matters. Not only can a great manager accelerate your career, but he or she will also leave their best traits with you. This will help you evolve into who you are as a leader. The reverse is true. A bad manager can decelerate your career, but he or she may also leave you with bad habits or scars that will be things you have to overcome.

What is the best thing someone can do in an interview? What is the worst?

One of the best things to do in an interview is show up prepared. You should know about the company, the role and the industry. During the interview, be yourself.

One of the worst things to do is act like you have the job already and have a sense of entitlement. Every interview, interviewer, and person you meet along the way matters and should be treated with respect.

What are some of the top qualities that Box looks for when hiring?

  • Work Ethic
  • Grit
  • Ability to Find Solutions (Not Problems)
  • Integrity
  • Intelligence

Could you share with us what you think the baseline skills a marketer needs are, and what marketers should start preparing for as business moves forward?

Great marketers need to be critical thinkers and creative problem solvers. The ability to look at data, understand the business problem, and come up with a solution never goes out of style for a marketer.

Any last piece of advice?

Always be the most authentic version of yourself.

We’re offering a FREE Webinar on “Careers in the Digital Age” with Steve Cadigan, former VP of Talent at LinkedIn and Cofounder of ISDI Digital University.
