Afterthought
A Poem
When I was ready,
you were absent
Adrift in a sea of tranquility
while I was a ship in a bottle
Held captive
Unwilling to sail
When you were ready,
I was preoccupied
Overlooking what was
right in front of me
even when you held
your arms up high
I didn’t see you
When we were together
we weren’t together
we were just side-by-side
Two friends commiserating
about anything except
each other
I heard about your wedding
and it drove a stake through
my fragile and underused heart
not because it wasn’t me, but
because you didn’t even
invite me to partake
because I was always an
afterthought
When I had a child
I didn’t send you a card
but you found out anyway
and it broke your heart
not because it wasn’t you, but
because I didn’t even take…
