Dumbstruck
A Poem
I’m dumbstruck at the status of the world
inside of a technological kaleidoscope
of morning rituals and best-laid plans
to make us feel like we are never doing enough
and can’t keep up with the culture algorithm
that is devaluing personal relationships
and human-to-human interaction
I’m dumbstruck that my phone simultaneously
tells me I’m using it too much, but also gives me
access to every app ever made, anywhere,
to put me into the vortex of time suck
and digital ennui which causes loneliness
so we then look back at our phones
to find a perfect match among the bots
I’m dumbstruck that kids might think that
nature is a screen on an iPad and that
a backyard is a place to watch Netflix
while the clouds pass by overhead without
a passing glance and the grass grows
in anonymity because it grows too slow
