Allen grabbed the reins of life when he decided to be a musician. Music has been his passion since he was drawn to the keyboard at a young age as he watched his grandmother play piano. The absolute craziness of it all, the laughter and tears of living rock and roll, are all captured in Allen’s F ’n’ A! Though his story is one of ups and downs, his love and desire to play the blues shines throughout the wild journey of being a musician that he shares with us.
A native of Los Angeles, Rick Allen is a blues, rock, and R&B organist and pianist. He has worked and toured with a variety of musicians — Howlin’ Wolf, Etta James, Delaney & Bonnie, Sonny Boy Williamson, and Albert King, in addition to the ones mentioned above. Relocating to New Orleans in the ’80s, Allen worked in blues clubs, playing and recording with an assortment of blues and Cajun performers, including Ernie K-Doe, King Floyd, Marcia Ball, and Freddy Fender. In the 1980s, he began doing studio work at Allen Toussaint’s Sea Saint Studios, and in 2000, Allen was nominated for a Grammy with The Dukes of Dixieland, for the album, Gloryland.
