What does the American South, Gingerbread House, a Batman blanket, and Shoulder Bones have in common? Mary B. Sellers. She is a true southerner who grew up and resides in Mississippi. Mary received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Mississippi in May of 2013. She has stories and essays published in several literary magazines, one of which is the magical poetry and fiction magazine called Gingerbread House. Currently, she writes book reviews for WhatIsThatBookAbout.com, is a freelance writer for a few publications, and is an associate publisher for Blooming Twig Books. Mary B. Sellers tries to write every day, but one thing that helps her write is her Batman blanket. Her blanket is her own bat signal to write books like Shoulder Bones.

The Batman blanket is not the only thing to motivate her writing. Mary has always known somewhere in the back of her mind that she was meant to be a writer. Her enthusiasm for writing first began with her love of books in general. Mary’s mother read to her every night as a child; the first step in stirring Mary’s desire to read. She kept reading so much that in fourth grade, she could read up to three to four books a week. With her love for books intact, she also began writing. In third grade, Mary failed a math test because she felt the need to put a story to paper instead. Still, she did not seriously begin writing until high school. Truly, Mary B. Sellers is a talented, inspirational, and extremely focused writer.

Mary B. Sellers focuses that talent in order to inspire her readers with Shoulder Bones. Her southern childhood unleashes itself in the stories collected in this book. Many readers believe her voice rings true in these tales and that she resembles a mixture of William Faulkner and Jane Austen. Shoulder Bones is chock-full of stories that move in and out of the worlds of fantasy and reality. Mary’s southern charm blends well with her vivid imagery in these stories. Overall, her writing in magazines like Gingerbread House, her childhood in the South, and cozying up under her Batman blanket are what led to the success of Shoulder Bones and make her a notable author that avid readers can look to for inspiration.
