I slacked a little yesterday after saying that the “#throwbackthursday” blogs would be a weekly feature, so here we are. I’m a day late, but trust me you’ll live. Here is your #FlashbackFriday blog of the week.

On August 28th, 2015 Halsey released her first studio album entitled Badlands. I remember hearing “Slow” by Lido & Halsey in January of 2015 and I thought that she had an amazing voice. The vibe given off in her songs is incredibly unqiue. I decided to look into her more. To my suprise she had a huge following and was interacting with tons of people all the time. I eventually found her EP. After hearing Room 93 I was hooked. However, I could not find anything else.

When her album finally came out I realized it was one of those few that you need to listen to “cover to cover.” (Yes, I am aware this phrase makes zero sense in today’s digital world, but you get the point.) Collaborating with producers like Lido definitely helped, but Halsey is an immense talent in her own right. Here are a few highlights from the album.

Mentioning this album without New Americana is just wrong. Great track.
In a way this song catapulted Halsey’s career.
Halsey has a serious talent for storytelling.
My actual favorite from the album.

I also love Halsey’s attitude toward race and social issues. She identifies as “tri-bi.” By saying this she means she is bi-racial, bisexual and bipolar. Not everyone would always understand but there are definitely privileges to being white, as she appears (known as white passing), heterosexual, and “mentally healthy”(I wish I could come up with a better term for this, but I can’t.) If people were more open minded none of these three would be an issue. Not a lot of artists or people in general are this open when it comes to these types of topics so she should be applauded for it. Halsey addresses being white passing in this tweet.

I only screenshotted this because I have seen so many tweets disappear.

Anyway, get immersed in Badlands here.
