The Current Status of Blockchain Games

It’s an undeniable truth that despite the high interest in blockchain after the launch of Bitcoin in 2009, there still aren’t any games that apply blockchain in a significant way. Meanwhile, numerous companies are releasing blockchain-incorporated games and, because we at ITAM Network are also developing a blockchain-based game, we will take a look at a few blockchain-based games that don’t have the best game qualities and aren’t perfect, but worth trying out.

The Beginning of Blockchain Games, CryptoKitties

CryptoKitties is a classic when it comes to blockchain games. Developed in 2017 by a Canadian startup, CryptoKitties is Ethereum-based and, as its name implies, is a simple game where you buy and sell virtual kitties. Despite its simplicity, because of it being the first ever blockchain-based game in the world, the number of users soared and accounted for 15% of the total transactions of the Ethereum network. CryptoKitties, which allows nearly infinite types of kitties that you can keep forever and transact with others, has incorporated the basics of blockchain very well, and although the enjoyment from playing it isn’t significant, it’s recommendable for people who are trying blockchain games for the first time.

Addition of Characters and Battle, Etheremon

A game beyond simple flora and fauna that added characters to the “mon” category. Etheremon is similar to CryptoKitties in the sense that you can collect and transact various monsters, but makes it different in that you can battle with the acquired characters. It’s a blockchain game where the number of unique monsters does not unlimitedly increase, but is actually limited and, therefore, gives it a rarity aspect. As its name implies, it is based on Ethereum and although it added some gaming functionalities to merely being “collectibles,” it still lacks the factors that makes it “gameplay.” Furthermore, it’s upsetting that it takes a really long time for a training or battle to process, due to Ethereum’s features.

A Mobile Blockchain Game That Makes Gameplay Possible, GoCryptobot

While the games mentioned above are considered 1st generation blockchain games that focus on “collectibles,” the 2018-released GoCrpytobot is a 2nd generation blockchain game with more emphasis on “gameplay.” Combining the familiar running-gameplay style with blockchain, GoCryptobot added gameplay to the previously-focused “collectibles” and “selling” qualities to blockchain games. In addition, while blockchain games were concentrated on webs, GoCryptobots was developed for mobile. In the Ethereum-based game, you can receive small amounts of Ethereum if you clear stages, and unlike previous blockchain games, there are many new features and various contents you can enjoy, such as combining different parts of robots and selling them.

Mediocre Blockchain Games

Games like GoCryptobot have begun to bring the form of games we already know to blockchain, and thus, the industry has begun to try new a variety of new attempts. However, the majority of the games currently are still trying to gamify the act of putting something on the block, instead of making quality games with satisfying gameplay. In the next post, we’ll go a bit further and look at blockchain games that are just as or even more impressive than existing games, with innovative gameplay.
