Hello, DevOps Enterprise Summit (DOES) Community!

With the fourth edition of the DevOps Enterprise Review, we want to thank you for taking a journey with us into the world of DevOps and IT in the Enterprise.

As a continuation of our bi-monthly periodical, our goal is to help keep the community connected with the happenings in, and around, the industry. This edition of the DOER features several resources for culture and methods for leadership, as transformation journeys are subject to new challenges and opportunities. Governance and DevSecOps also round out some of the featured topics we all care about most — and from the subject matter experts helping to show us the way.

Also, be sure to catch the most recent updates for the upcoming DevOps Enterprise Summit in London happening in late June. If there was anything we missed or that you want to call out for the next edition of DevOps Enterprise Review, please send us your ideas in the comments section below.

Now, without further ado, happy reading and we look forward to hearing from you!

Crowdsourcing Technology Governance At Target

The following is an excerpt from a presentation by Dan Cundiff (Principal Engineer,) Levi Geinert (Director of Engineering,) and Lucas Rettig (Principal Product Owner) at Target, titled “Crowdsourcing Technology Governance.” Slides visuals by Nicole Forsythe (@nicolibrarian on Twitter).

You can watch the video of the presentation, which was originally delivered at the 2018 DevOps Enterprise Summit in Las Vegas.

Mythbusting DevOps In The Enterprise: Addressing Culture and Leadership Aspects during Transforming

The DevOps movement has been primarily driven by practitioners, which is why we’ve ended up with such success at the practice level. As success and awareness have risen, we’ve now seen new challenges and questions around the path to success and applicability for larger organizations. Some have done this very well, others are struggling, and others yet have no idea where to start. We decided to confront this head-on, listing the most common leadership and cultural traps for our target audience, ultimately aiming to provide high-level reassurance and evidence that DevOps practices are generally applicable and plausibly successful in enterprise environments. Our goal is to make it clear to technology leaders that transformation in enterprise environments is both feasible and desirable.

Leading The Transformation

Leading the Transformation is an executive guide, providing a clear framework for improving development and delivery. Instead of the traditional Agile and DevOps approaches that focus on improving the effectiveness of teams, this book targets the coordination of work across teams in large organizations — an improvement that executives are uniquely positioned to make.

Industry News — Read All About It!

Ten Years of DevOps — five ways businesses are still getting it wrong — Catapult’s Alex Fishlock runs down the five key ways organizations are getting DevOps wrong — and what they can do about it. (Source: Alex Fishlock, Computing Magazine)

Bank of England’s large IT spend partly due to use of manual processes and legacy systems — A report from Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) revealed that the Bank of England spent 33.6% more on IT than other central government departments and that its management acknowledged there was “room for significant efficiency improvements” in areas of its IT. (Source: Karl Flinders, ComputerWeekly)

Culture & Methods — the State of Practice in 2019 — It is only with cultural change that the promise of the new ways of working will be achieved. Many organizations are embarking on “Digital Transformation”, and it is often the same organization which has undergone two or three “Agile Transformations” in the past without seeing the promised benefits. The team at InfoQ believes this is because the adoption is often implemented to “pay lip-service” to the idea, and is shallow rather than truly transformational. (Source: InfoQ)

DevOps hiring and training: 16 top-rated skills — What skills does an IT team need to do DevOps well? The best DevOps pros have skill sets spanning three crucial areas: automation, process, and soft skills. (Source: Kevin Casey, The Enterpriser’s Project)

4 Steps to Improving Your Team’s Continuous Security — A recent npm survey revealed that 77 percent of developers were concerned about the quality and security of the open source libraries they use, while 52 percent said the tools currently available were inadequate. Given the trust issues in open source and the ongoing discovery of website and application vulnerabilities, security should be top of mind for developers at the start of every project — but also on an ongoing basis. I call this practice of constant re-assessment “continuous security.” (Source: Adam Baldwin, DevOps.com)

2019 Book Publishing Update

Books are some of our favorite sources of learning and we continuously keep our eyes peeled and ears open for book recommendations that the awesome tech community recommends. Recently, we came across a post from Goldratt Books on Twitter that caught our eye:

“The Goal by Eliyahu M. Goldratt was first published in 1984, but this ‘business novel’ introduced the Theory of Constraints, and remains utterly relevant in today’s technology-driven world.” — @aytekintank @JotForm

As we dug a bit deeper, we also found this insightful post from Aytekin Tank on the Theory of Constraints that digs a bit deeper into the subject matter.

Also, as an update from the IT Revolution Library, as there was an exciting milestone that happened in early March — Dominica DeGrandis’ book “Making Work Visible” has sold more than 20,000 copies!

Book publisher ping’d me: Making Work Visible has sold over 20k copies. #CelebrationMoment So many Thank yous! @ITRevBooks #MoreNoLessWIP #Flow

Thank you for reading the fourth edition of the DevOps Enterprise Review (DOER)! Let’s continue to Get Together and Go Faster!
